Justin Carter is a NYC based musician, composer, and sound designer with a deep passion for crafting emotive and captivating musical and sound experiences. His musical journey began as a kid playing drums in churches with his mother. He earned his BA in Music Performance from Livingstone College where he honed his skills and nurtured a love for creative expression. Currently, he’s pursuing a MFA in Media Scoring at Brooklyn College and is eagerly expanding his horizons and knowledge in the realm of soundscapes and storytelling through music. 

 

With a heartbeat rooted in rhythm, Justin found his voice as a drummer. From touring with the internationally renowned Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, to creating immersive beats for many local performers, he has explored genres from hip-hop to jazz and funk to country. He has produced music with artists such as Descendent Emcee and Noba. He was the producer and musical director of Jazze Belle who played Blue Note, Celebrate Brooklyn, and the Harlem Arts Festival in addition to touring nationally. 

 

Justin’s talents extend to sonic storytelling. Justin strives to create soundtracks that resonate deeply, invoke emotions, and add depth to visual narratives. He has composed original scores for short films, plays, and student projects, including "All Things Considered" and "(re)Connection." His fascination with sound design and mixing led him to enhance the auditory experience of many films and podcasts like “Leave Looking Up” where he records and mixes each episode. As a multi-faceted creator, Justin is adept at using tools like Avid Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live to bring his audio vision to life. 

 

Justin is passionate about pushing boundaries and blending genres, seeking inspiration from diverse cultures and musical traditions. With an expected MFA graduation in 2023, he’s excited to continue his journey as a composer, sound designer, and musician. Whether drumming onstage or composing behind the scenes, his commitment to the language of music and sound remains unwavering.
